  • Description
    EQUIPMENT

Dream Black Metallic paintwork, Dark grey Nubuck and camouflage leather upholstery, Folding soft-top in black mohair, 16-inch alloy wheels, 5-speed manual transmission, Electric doors, Twin-exit stainless steel exhaust, Electric windows, Electric door mirrors, Z1 cassette radio, Boot-mounted CD changer, Leather steering wheel and gear knob, MPH speedometer, Digital clock, Cigarette lighter, Ash tray, Spare wheel and cover.

    EXTERIOR

Finished in the timeless Dream Black metallic, the paintwork on this Z1 boasts a deep and uniform shine following a machine polish by our in-house detailer. The car presents really well throughout with even panel gaps and few blemishes to report, namely a peppering of stone chips to the front end but mainly to the bonnet. There are no scuffs or scrapes to either of the bumpers and the lights are crack-free all round. The hood remains in excellent watertight condition and the electric sliding doors operate smoothly without fault. A splendid example, ready to be driven and very much enjoyed.

    INTERIOR

The Z1-specific seats present very nicely in their original dark grey / camouflage leather combo. In-line with the mileage the bolsters show only minor wear, the Nubuck areas having recently been treated and fed to maintain a supple finish. Leather extends from the seats, along the centre console and across the dash, all of which remains in great condition. The steering wheel also presents in fine order with a lovely matte finish to the leather, and the original Z1 cassette radio is pleasingly still fitted. The car is further equipped with a CD changer discreetly mounted in the boot where the spare wheel can also be found.

    ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Having always been maintained to a very high standard the Z1’s 2.5-litre straight-six is as smooth as ever, and out on the road it’s an absolutely joy to drive. Looking inside the engine bay everything appears in great shape, not overly dressed but in excellent original condition throughout. On closer inspection there are no signs of any accident damage or poor repair to be found, and even the yellowish factory wax can still be seen on many components.

The Z1 has just returned from a fresh service and timing belt change at our trusted BMW specialist, Barkers Motor Works in Haslemere. Barkers know the car well and have looked after it for the last few years. The gear linkage bushes were replaced by them last year and so, as you would expect, the gearbox feels really tight and precise to operate. The current owner has also had a bespoke twin-exit stainless exhaust fitted which sounds great and looks superb, giving the car a more symmetrical rear end.

    HISTORY FILE

First registered in August 1989 this wonderful Dream Black example has now driven only 60,332 miles from new. Reading through the history file the car has always been well maintained by either BMW or by well-regarded BMW specialists such as Munich Legends and Barkers Motor Works. The last service included a timing belt change and was only recently carried out in August 2022 less than 50 miles ago. The accompanying paperwork comprises a stack of invoices dating back to the mid-nineties, a raft of MOT certificates, an original Z1 press pack, owner’s handbook, spare keys, an issue of Straight Six magazine in which the car was featured, and the V5C showing 9 former keepers (the current since 2011).
