This 46-year-old Hellcat roams the streets like an apex predator today, but this cat’s been to hell and back. Sounds cheeky, but “Hell and back” is the history of the Dodge Challenger program, and it’s a story told in power-to-weight ratios. In 1974 the Challenger had ballooned to a whopping 21.5 pounds-per-horsepower. Gone was the Hemi, the 440, the 426 wedge and the 383 magnum. The gutless 150-horse 318 in the 3,225 pound Challenger didn’t challenge anyone. The once great Challenger ended its short four-year run with a 0-60 time of 10 whole seconds. Both Challenger and Cuda were dead and buried by 1975. But Mopar wasn’t content to leave it at “Rest in Peace”. Decades later, wearing fiery badges like “Demon” and “Hellcat” the Challenger returned to the street, as if from the underworld. With 808HP on tap, the Dodge Demon became the fastest production quarter-mile car in history. Dodge cut the power-to-weight ratio from 21.5 pounds in 1974 down to a svelte 5.29 pounds-per-horsepower in the 2020. The Hellcat wasn’t far behind with 6.29 LBS/HP. But, the Devil is in the details. Fast as they are, the new Demon tips the scales at 4,280 lbs, and the Hellcat is a punishing 4,448 Enter the 1974 Snakeskin Green Hellcat before you, the best of both worlds. The light vintage body crossbred with the modern hellcat motor puts both lean AND mean in its DNA. But to wear the “Hellcat” badge you couldn’t just drop a 707HP crate motor in an old chassis. There’s more to performance than power and weight. The 2020 Hellcat is a road racer. It corners. Our ’74 Hellcat had to be every bit the corner carver that the modern Hellcat is. How did our example get there? The 525-pound iron 318 along with its aging K-member, suspension, steering, and drum brakes all went into the bin. A factory ordered Hellcat crate motor shed 125 pounds from the scales. A corner carving tubular K-member and Independent Front Suspension from Control Freaks shaved another 121 pounds off, while adding rack and pinion steering and modern vented brakes. With just those two changes 1974 Hellcat Challenger was already hitting the 2020 Demon well below the belt. The vintage body was treated to a rotisserie restoration and Mopar’s signature Snakeskin Green factory paint colour. 4.2 LBS/HP makes the ’74 Hellcat a full pound-per-horse lighter than the new Dodge Demon at 5.29, and 2 pounds per-horse lighter than the 2020 Hellcat at 6.29. Further weight reductions come from a fiberglass hood, fenders, and numerous modern components; the suspected LBS/HP ratio is likely under 4.0. The power and weight of the ’74 Hellcat put it in the company of supercars. But it’s a muscle car at heart. That 707HP is sent to the rear wheels by a bulletproof 727 automatic transmission designed especially for this build with a reverse valve body. For the unanointed this automatic transmission is shifted manually from neutral down to first, second, and third gear at the bottom with no clutch, or danger of shifting into neutral at high RPM. Pretty slick bit of kit. To maintain handling continuity front to rear, Control Freaks designed a Strange Engineering Ford 9” nodular iron rear end stuffed with highway friendly 3.00:1 Posi. With so much power on tap, there’s no benefit to 4:11 gears. Cruising at 70MPH the engine retains low rpms for a 3 speed. And should you want to cruise more quietly, the exhaust features a key fob operated cut-out on the x-pipe turning it into a quieter y-pipe. The interior is dash headliner and seats are in matched alcantera with factory SRT Hellcat call outs. An Intelletronix 6-gauge dash panel keeps tabs on all vitals with analogue needles. Remove the hood pins and lift the T/A blacked out hood too see the cat’s beating heart. It looks almost factory sitting in the 46-year-old engine bay.
